OGDEN — A shooting in the parking lot of a convenience store left a rap singer injured.

Saturday afternoon at the Maverik convenience store at 3186 Washington Boulevard, a rap artist, 23-year-old Cuete Yeska, approached a man about selling a CD to him.

According to Ogden Police Lt. Will Cragun, Yeska was traveling with a musical group from Colorado to Seattle for a concert tour. He said the musicians were trying to sell their CDs for the expense of the trip after finishing a show in Albuquerque.

Cragun said the group, who he believes produces rap music, was traveling in a motor home that had art on the side that would appear to support a "south side (gang) organization." He said it was a mural of the various performers that "would be indicative of affiliation with gang members."

The victim approached a man in the parking lot and asked him about purchasing a CD. Cragun said the man said he wasn't interested and added that he was affiliated with a certain gang before leaving the scene.

An hour later, about 3:20 p.m., the man drove by and opened fire. He shot four rounds toward the musicians' RV. Three shots struck the vehicle, and the fourth struck Yeska in the abdomen.

"I think this is a random act," Cragun said. "This wasn't a situation where they know each other."

Yeska was transported to the McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, where he underwent surgery. He is expected to recover, as his injuries did not appear to be life threatening.

Police are currently searching for the alleged shooter. He has been described as a Hispanic male in his 20s with facial tattoos and bald or balding hair. The suspect vehicle is a 1990s model Chevy Blazer in either gray or black. Those with information can call Ogden Police at 801-629-8221.
