MIDVALE — A man with outstanding warrants for his arrest ran from police officers Tuesday afternoon, but didn't get very far after breaking both of his ankles.

Clint Wainward, 26, was in compliance when he showed up for his court appearance at the Midvale Court, but his instincts took over when he heard he had outstanding warrants for his arrest.

"The bailiff and the judge had informed him that they had outstanding warrants for his arrest," said Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department.

Wainward took off running, leaving both the judge and bailiff in the courthouse. A witness saw him run across the street and stop, as if trying to catch his breath. Wainward then jumped off a retaining wall, landing incorrectly on his feet.

"He had injuries to both of his ankles, possibly has broken ankles there," Lt. Hoyal said.

In this situation, he had the one outstanding warrant. But he's now added another charge on that and a felony three escape from custody.

However, the fall didn't stop Wainward. The Unified Police K9 Unit tracked his footsteps to an abandoned garage. Now he's back in custody, but facing more than just a previous misdemeanor.

"In this situation, he had the one outstanding warrant," Lt. Hoyal said. "But he's now added another charge on that and a felony three escape from custody."

Wainward was taken to Saint Mark's Hospital for his injuries and then will be taken to the Salt Lake County Jail.
