HOLLADAY — Police are searching for a woman who crashed her car into the garage of a vacant home in Holladay, then broke into a neighbor's home.
Unified police say the woman was speeding as she left a Smith's store on Highland Drive this morning. She drove into a neighborhood near 1800 East and 4600 South, almost hit a parked car, then crashed into the garage of a vacant house across the street.
The woman jumped out of the car and broke into a neighboring home. Members of the family who lives there were asleep.
One of the residents, Anna Diederich, told KSL, "I woke up to hearing boxes tumbling in our basement. I went and found a girl who was crying, saying, ‘Police have a warrant out for my arrest. Please hide me, please hide me.'"
Diederich says she did not feel threatened by the woman. However, her younger brothers were asleep nearby, so she insisted the woman leave the home. Diederich told her she could go out the back door or out the front door, to police. The woman did leave, but somehow evaded officers.
Police say the residents did the right thing to protect their family.
Officers are now looking for the woman but have only a vague description. She is described as short and having long, black hair. "She looked helpless," Diederich said. "She had a white tank top and no shoes, jeans. It was just sad."
