SALT LAKE CITY — A former Provo police officer now faces a lawsuit over accusations he groped a woman during a traffic stop.
The woman filed the lawsuit in Salt Lake City federal court last week. It claims former officer Jeffrey Westerman detained her after a July 2010 traffic accident, then groped her after threatening to arrest her for driving under the influence.
The suit asks for an unspecified amount that will be determined at trial. The lawsuit also names Provo's former police chief. It alleges the experience caused the woman to "suffer extreme shock" and "embarrassment."
Westerman was fired after the incident. He took a plea deal last year and was sentenced to 180 days in jail for felony attempted forcible sexual abuse and misdemeanor obstruction of justice.
