Go Back Home Send them back to their homes. We have enough bad guys here that we have to worry about. I feel we did all we could to help the Katrina people and if they are criminals then they should be their states responsibility. Send they there!!!

Go Back Home @Monique P. - Well, lets see. If they are Americans, then ANY state is their home. The main issue here is why were they let out? Why make a bail amount so low they can walk out and endanger more people? Lock them up and make them pay for the crimes they are doing, or at least hold them in jail until they have a trail to PROVE their guilt, then lock them away for many years! These people obviously dont have any chance of rehabilitation, not do they want it. If they are here illegally, throw them in prison and then send them back after they have their prison time served. NO MORE SLAPS ON THE WRISTS!!!

Ignorance is bliss @Monique P. - We don't want to pollute our self righteous community with someone other than our own, right. I hope you hear the sarcasm in my voice. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, not all Katrina victims are criminals, but maybe we can just send them all to Australia.

Who is the landlord? As long as irresponisble landlords rent to drug dealers, we will always have this problem.

Ship 'em back I'm glad our state was able to help some of the people who were misplaced because of hurricane Katrina, but if those "transplants" want to live here, they need to become productive members of our community and try to help build up the community instead of trying to break it down by selling drugs of all things. Just earlier this week, another "transplant" set fire to an apartment complex in Provo....as Monique said, we have enough criminals here in Utah already. I think a simple "thank you" from those brought here from Louisianna would be more appreciated.

ship em back @J P. - yeah i agree 100% ship em back. utah was so nice to them giving them food and a roof over there heads and also the govt gave them a debit card for 2,000.00$. the ppl down there are so used to welfare and stealing and drugs. we dont need it here. and this place has been busted 2 times in a month. humm dosent these land lords give back ground checks to these ppl when they rent. where i live they do. and they are very strict. send them back after they do there time. good lord. whats next? make the land lords to these small places a little at fault also to deterr who they rent to and start checking on there tennaunts.

@miner s. - If you read the whole article, there were people from Salt Lake arrested as well, the lease was under the SALT LAKE residents names. They have been long term tenants in that house, for at least 6 years that I am aware of.

Repeat offenders I think it is totally ridiculous for police officers to put themselves in jeopardy time after time only to have some irresponsible judge give the criminal a token wrist slap and turn him/her loose so they can repeat their criminal activities. Illegal drugs are among the most incidious of crimes. The cost to all of us is far too great to simply look the other way. Our criminal justice system is in disarray. Far too many judges do mot measure up to the responsibiiity.

AGAIN, AND AGAIN Why should our police officers have to do the job twice? Ill tell you why! The county council wants to take away 300 beds from the jail. SO when these SCUMBAGS are let out of jail, they are going to re-Offend again, again, because there is no consequence for them. They are simply booked into jail and released and if they don’t decide to file charge on them they only stay in jail for 3 days. Let’s stop thinking about how much MONEY we can save, and start thinking about how much crime we can prevent.

Drug bust House I think we all need to look at the real problem it does not matter where they are from because they are now residence of Utah. We do have drug dealers in Utah to. The Problem lies in tha fact that the Judges are allowing them back out on the streets with a simple fine and bail if we are lucky they will get a few months of jail time. That is were the problem begans, they need stronger punishments. Then maybe it will detour them from becoming repeat offenders.

Stirring the pot So essentially you are arguing for a Stepford Wives type of Utopia. That doesnt exist. The article didnt say that the people arrested were Katrina refugees, but i do think that more responsible reporting is necessary instead of saying hey, this is the same place that the Katrina folks were arrested by, why is that relevant. Why pull in people that werent even there, that is irresponsible and only envokes ire.

So if this event took place last night, and had nothign to do with Katrina refugees, why bring it up unless it is to stir the pot.

Stirring the pot @Alisha R. - I have to agree with Alisha here. As much as I love KSL and the wonderful job they usually do, I feel it was unnecessary to bring up the reference to "Hurricane Katrina evacuees". It was pointless. Who cares where they are from, the fact remains that these people were arrested because they are drug dealers, not because they were victims of a hurricane! Not all the people that came from New Orleans were criminals and I think it is time the media stops insinuating that they are!

Hurrican Katrina evacuees @Kelly R. - KSL was reporting the news. KSL didn't say anything about all evacuees being criminals, but they did the right thing in reporting the facts.

The fact is New Orleans had a severe crime problem prior to Katrina. If some of this crime has been imported to Utah, this is newsworthy.

There were many good people who lived in New Orleans. Most who came to Utah obey the law. These good people should continue to live here--and be treated with kindness and respect. Those few who choose to prey on the good people of this State should be sent home in handcuffs--especially those who are repeat offenders.

Judges Judges are not always to blame. I have family memebers who have found the revolving door as well. My brother has been booked into UT County jail 26 times on drug related crimes, and of those 26 alot of times the judge gave him the maximum sentence. Which in many cases isn't very much. He pays his fine sometimes spends 30 to 90 days and once almost a year. He comes out of jail clean he normaly stays clean for 30 days to a year then gets right back on it. We need to make the minimum sentences harsher esp for repeat offenders and drug dealers. And more importantly we need more rehab and treatment programs. Of the 26 times he has not been ordered to rehab and the family can try to put him in a rehab but he can leave at any time with out a court order.
Try sending first or second time offenders thru rehab instead of giving them a small fine. Educate yourself about these horrible drugs and do ANYTHING you can to help stop the abuse. The drug court systems seem to be working.
And if you have someone dear that is addicted don't lose hope.

Drugs @Angel J. - Angel, true in some cases. the addictions are up to the individual. For instance, I like to drink a cold one as much as the next guy, they say alcohol is an addiction. No, it is a habit that can be broken as well as drugs. If I was told to quit drinking beer or I would lose my job, house wife and kids. I would fore sure kick the habit. It's all mental, your mind can overcome what your body desires. I've been around many drug addicts in my life, the continue to take drugs simply because they don't care.

Councilman Bradley Yep, keep taking bed space from the Jail and see what happens. The Salt Lake County Jail had 2600 bed last year. Now it has been reduced to 1600. The County Council want to reduce it even more. The old saying is even more true now. The bad guy gets released before the Officer's report is submitted.

Super... Way to hold a double-standard, Utah.

As if this state was so perfect before the Katrina incident happened.

Get over it, you're going to have drug dealers no matter what. As said before, if they're Americans, Utah is their home as much as any other state.

It's nice to see some stories about how the justice systems really don't do much about criminals until it gets as serious as a murder or such.

I don't know the reasons behind it but I know of several criminals who committed hideous crimes and have just been sent on their way without even a fine.

Katrina evacuees.......nothing but trouble !!!! Here we try to do a good deed for someone in need and look how they repay us. I have heard of so many Katrina victoms that have moved here and done nothing but bring their problems with them. Maybe that is why they started orginizations like the red cross. So the victoms can stay in their own neighborhoods and receive some help without moving to good towns and taking their problems with them. So far we have heard Katrina victoms involved in Drug Deals, Shootings and last week was an apartment fire. Instead of opening our state to them, just send the red cross money to keep them out !!!!

Re: Drug Bust.... @Cherrine M. - Is there ANYONE in the state of Utah that didn't think there were drug dealers in Utah before the the Katrina evacuees got here??? I think our feelings are clear towards the drug dealers and other criminals that we are now housing since Katrina that we don't much care for. As for those people....send them packing NOW! We are all painfully aware that drugs very well may be in our backyards or the backyards of our neighboring communities. Sounds like they may be under your perfect little cold nose. Hmmmmmm.
