TAYLORSVILLE — A West Valley City motorcycle police officer was critically injured in an accident Thursday.

The officer was riding through the intersection of 4100 South and Redwood Road about 10:35 a.m. when his motorcycle was struck by a van making a left turn, said Taylorsville Police Sgt. Rosie Rivera.

"There are significant injuries to his legs," Rivera said.

West Valley police released a statement saying officer Dana Pugmire "sustained serious injuries to both his lower and upper extremities including a broken leg, broken arm and severe lacerations and bruising."

Pugmire was expected to remain in the hospital for several days. He has been with the West Valley Police Department for five years and is a senior motor officer, said West Valley Police Sgt. Mike Powell.

Drugs or alcohol were not believed to be a factor, and investigators were working to determine whether speed played a role, Rivera said.

It was not immediately known if the officer was attempting to make a traffic stop when he was hit or just passing through the intersection.
