HIGHLAND -- Police have identified three people who were struck by a car while running across Interstate 15 Saturday night.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, 52-year-old Deyon Cowan, her son, 36-year-old Jason Cowan -- both of Provo -- and Jason's girlfriend, 29-year-old Shelly Jarvis of Orem, ran out of gas on northbound I-15 near Highland and Alpine around 9:30 p.m.

Troopers say the three ran across the northbound lanes, hopped the divide and were trying to cross the southbound lanes when they were hit by a car. Deyon Cowan died at the scene.

Jason Cowan and Jarvis were transported by helicopter and ambulance to area hospitals in serious condition.

All three were wearing black clothing.
