Kenneth Flowers, 33, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder and possession of a firearm by a restricted person. Police identified the victim as Cisco M. Cross, 45, of Herriman.

Salt Lake Police Lt. Shawn Josephson said Flowers was a "restricted person" because he had previously been deported.

Police originally said the shooting was related to an argument over a card game, but Josephson said Sunday the incident was actually a drug deal gone bad.

He said Flowers and Cross had been at the apartment all day, though neither lived there. Some sort of dispute occurred when two other people entered the apartment about 6 p.m.

Multiple shots were fired and Cross died at the scene. Josephson said he was not aware of any drug arrests in connection with the incident.

Cross had an extensive criminal history, including a 2009 conviction for driving under the influence and several other cases that were resolved in recent months. He pleaded guilty in October to attempted drug distribution and attempted theft, and in November to possession of drugs and a dangerous weapon, while an array of other charges were dropped, according to court records. Cross was scheduled to be sentenced in January.

He was booked for investigation of aggravated assault on Nov. 24, jail records show.
