Sam Penrod reporting A four alarm fire Wednesday evening at a laundry detergent factory in Salt Lake City caused millions of dollars in damage.

Detergent Factory Catches Fire

Fire crews are finishing up at the scene, after responding to what seemed to be the potential for a real disaster.

The way the building was constructed is being credited with keeping the fire contained to a small area.

Workers at Huish Detergent, located near 1900 S. 3600 West, noticed smoke in an area where laundry detergents and household chemicals are packaged.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. It was possibly from a machine in an area where the packaging is printed.

Fire doors were closed to keep the fire contained, giving firefighters time to set up before going in. That kept the fire from spreading and damage to the building to a minimum, which was full of finished product.

Scott Freitag, Salt Lake City Fire Dept: "This is why we put these codes in place and require buildings of this size to be built with concrete and steel and have fire retardant systems and ways to stop the fire. So the building was a positive component in getting the fire stopped and contained to the room where it started."

150 workers inside of the building were evacuated. One of them did suffer from some smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
