SALT LAKE CITY -- A national study released Monday shows Utah export numbers are tops in the West, meaning the beehive state may play a role in the nation's economic recovery.

Utah's numbers are pretty solid when it comes to products exported from our state. In fact, the new study, commissioned by the Brookings Institution, shows that among the nation's 100 largest metro areas, Utah claims three of them.

Franz Kolb is Utah's regional director of international trade and diplomacy. He says Utah is seeing a direct benefit from this positive news.

"Exports have a direct impact on employment," Kolb says. "Over 100,000 people in Utah are working because of international trade."

State numbers are equally impressive: In 2009, Utah had over 2,400 businesses involved in exporting.
