BEIJING (AP) - A U.S. stunt pilot was missing and his Chinese translator dead after their aircraft crashed into a lake in China's northeast on Tuesday, state media reported.
The accident involving David Riggs took place about 1 p.m. on Tuesday outside Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
Xinhua said Riggs had been flying a high-performance Lancair plane that had been assembled at a local airport. It said rescuers were still searching for Riggs while an investigation into the crash was under way.
Riggs' website listed him as a Hollywood stunt pilot, movie producer and holder of several world aviation speed records. It said he became the first American to fly from a Chinese military base since World War II during the 2010 China International Air Races.
Calls to the Studio City, California, offices of Riggs' Mach One Aviation Inc. were answered by a message saying it was unable to connect to voice mail.
