(KSL News) Cedar City police have arrested the man who shot an officer.

Officer Jason Thomas stopped when he saw a pickup stuck in the snow last night. KCSG-TV in St. George shot a story about him earlier this year.

He soon noticed the driver, 30-year-old Bryan Featherhat, had alcohol on his breath and there were beer cans in the pickup.

Featherhat grabbed a 12 gauge shotgun out of the truck and fired two rounds at Thomas, hitting him in the chest and back.

Some other people had stopped to help Featherhat, and he took off in their car. Police found that vehicle last night with footprints leading away from it.

Then early this morning a group of coyote hunters spotted Featherhat walking alongside a highway. Since he no longer had a gun, police arrested him without incident.

Keith Millett, Cedar City Police: "The officers that interviewed him say that he was kind of paranoid or kind of schizophrenic. He was hearing voices and he mentioned something about the bad music had told him to murder somebody."

Officer Thomas has 22 pellets in him, but he's in fair condition. Police say Thomas' bulletproof vest probably saved his life.
