SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City police are investigating a shooting early Sunday that left a 17-year-old boy injured.

At around 2:19 a.m., an officer with the Liberty Patrol Division of the Salt Lake City Police Department heard multiple gunshots fired near the area of Wood Avenue (1600 South) and Major Street (50 East), followed by several cars and people dispersing quickly. Upon checking the area, police say they found multiple shell casings on the ground at 1485 S. Major Street.

Around 3 a.m., police learned someone dropped off a 17-year-old boy at the hospital with a gunshot wound, according to a statement from the agency. The boy's injuries are not life-threatening.

It is unknown who shot the boy, as circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation. But police believe someone started shooting at a group of people on Major Street and two people fired back.

Those two individuals are cooperating with the investigation, according to the statement, and no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information — including those who may have video surveillance or photos from the area at the time — is asked to call police at 801-799-3000.
