CAINEVILLE, Wayne County — One man was killed and three others injured in a crash that closed state Route 24 near Caineville in Wayne County Friday morning, officials said.

A blue Volkswagen Jetta was eastbound on S.R. 24 when it slowed down and almost came to a complete stop in the lane, troopers said. A black Dodge Durango was behind the car and didn’t see the Jetta had stopped.

The Durango rear ended the Jetta, causing it to roll upside down, off the roadway and killing the Jetta’s male driver. The driver’s wife, who was a passenger, was seriously injured and flown via medical helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The two occupants of the Durango were taken via ambulance to Severi Valley Regional Hospital in Richfield with minor injuries, troopers said.

Drugs and alcohol weren’t suspected as factors in the crash, troopers said.

The two Jetta occupants were from Melbourne, Australia, and the two individuals in the Durango were from Austria and Switzerland.

The name of the man killed in the crash wasn’t released.

Both directions of the roadway closed three miles east of Caineville about 10:45 a.m., according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Brady Zaugg, but reopened by 2:30 p.m.
