SOUTH SALT LAKE — The Salt Lake County Jail was briefly in lockdown after a car crash caused a power outage Saturday afternoon.
The power outage happened around 2:15 p.m. after a male driver hit a power pole near 700 West and 3300 South, police said.
The driver was heading north on 700 West and planned to turn at the intersection, but he was driving a stick shift and panicked when he couldn't complete the turn, South Salt Lake Police Sgt. Matt Oehler said.
Instead, the driver continued forward and crashed into a fence and a power pole.
The crash knocked down the pole and caused a brief power outage in the area, including at the Salt Lake County Jail. As standard procedure during a power outage, officers put the jail on lockdown.
The driver was uninjured, and no impairment was involved in the crash.
Rocky Mountain Power restored the power in about an hour, and the lockdown at the jail was lifted.
