MURRAY — A man was killed after a shooting in Murray on Wednesday evening, police said.

At about 5:30 p.m., a man pulled into a parking lot at Check City near the intersection of 4500 South and State Street, Murray Police Detective Kenny Bass said.

Another man came up to the car, opened the passenger-side door and fired a shot at the driver.

After he was shot, the man accelerated straight east across State Street and struck several cars, Bass said.

The driver later was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Bass said. He had been shot in the head, according to Bass.

The shooter fled southwest from the area on foot. Police were still searching for him as of 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Bass described the shooter as a shorter white man wearing a black jacket and khaki or gray pants.

Bass said investigators had not yet had the chance to identify the victim of the shooting.

Initial evidence showed the shooting was probably drug-related, according to Bass. The crime did not appear to be random, and there may be some acquaintance between the victim and the suspect, Bass said.

Northbound lanes of State Street were closed in the area from 4500 South to 4800 South, according to Utah Department of Transportation. Bass said the road would be reopened within the next few hours.

Bass said he did not know if any other people were injured after the driver hit other cars on State Street.

“We’re just lucky at this point that no more people were killed at least and unfortunately this individual was,” Bass said.
