LAYTON — For as many times as firefighter Tyson Mason had ridden in a fire truck, his friends and family figured one last ride would be what he would have wanted.

Mason, just 29 years old, loved everything about being a firefighter and a paramedic with the Salt Lake City Fire Department. Prior to joining the department, Mason had also worked at the Kaysville and Ogden fire departments.

“He always strived to do what needed to be done,” said Life Flight pilot Curt Kelsey.

Mason had just finished a shift for Life Flight in the Uintah Basin when he was coming home on U. S. Highway 40 on Jan 22.

Mason and one of his colleagues in the car were hit by another vehicle that had crossed into their lane while trying to pass another car near Strawberry Reservoir. Mason was pronounced dead at the scene. His colleague in the car, a nurse, survived and continues to recover.

“It’s been an honor to work with him and get to know him, and we’re going to miss him,” said Salt Lake City Fire Department Capt. Rick Black.

During the funeral in Layton on Saturday, Mason was remembered as a man who loved the outdoors, tinkering in his garage, and especially loved his wife, Haileigh, who had just given birth to their son, Lukas, a week before he died.

“I got to see the joy he experienced,” Kelsey said. “I’d never seen him so happy. He was on cloud nine.”

Mason and his smile will be missed by all of those who knew him.

“He always had that smile on his face, and we’re going to miss it,” Black said.
