SALT LAKE CITY — As the quarterback race was starting to heat up for the Utes, a nagging injury to one Utah quarterback will push the decision back until fall camp.

Utah quarterback Troy Williams, a highly touted junior college athlete out of Santa Monica, California, will be cheering his teammates from the sidelines for the rest of spring camp. Williams is out due to a “sore throwing arm," according to the Utah athletics.

Williams, a potential front-runner for the starting job to lead the Utes this upcoming season, will look to continue the quarterback battle with Brandon Cox and Tyler Huntley this fall.

Cox a redshirt junior who is familiar with Utah’s system, will split reps going forward with true freshman Huntley. These two quarterbacks look to add explosiveness to the offense, especially in the passing game, which at times last season was a missing piece for the Utes.

“We’re starting to establish more of an aggressive mentality,” offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said in an ESPN 700 interview. “We just want to be able to get the ball down the field better this year.”

In last Saturday's first spring scrimmage for the Utes, Cox had one of his best days as a Utah quarterback. Cox threw for 223 yards, going 18 of 25 from the field and adding three touchdowns to his stellar performance. One of his three touchdowns was an impressive deep ball to wide receiver Caleb Repp for a 50-yard touchdown.

Although the Utes won’t determine a starting quarterback through spring football camp, look for Cox and Huntley to step up with the absence of Williams. With two weeks remaining, the two quarterbacks will look to add the explosiveness that Utah’s offense is looking for.
