PRICE — Carbon County Emergency Management Director Jason Llewelyn has been placed on unpaid leave and booked into jail as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, according to Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood.

"There are still many unanswered questions regarding this situation involving Mr. Llewelyn, and due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, many of these questions cannot be answered at this time," Wood said in a statement released Tuesday.

Wood later told KSL his office recently "got wind of improprieties with (Llewelyn's) spending" of public monies and launched an investigation. The criminal probe reached the point Monday where detectives interviewed Llewelyn and subsequently arrested him, the sheriff said.

Carbon County detectives booked Llewelyn into the Emery County Jail for investigation of misuse of public funds and credit card fraud, Wood said.

The sheriff added that he takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and said a separate internal investigation into the allegations against Llewelyn is already underway. The Carbon County Attorney's Office is expected to review the results of the criminal investigation for possible formal charges.

"Because of the number of records that still need to be reviewed, I don't expect we'll receive a formal report (from the sheriff's office) for at least a few more days," deputy Carbon County attorney Jeremy Humes said.

Llewelyn is a certified peace officer and a 10-year veteran of the Carbon County Sheriff's Office. His position as director of emergency management is unique though, because he serves as the head of a county department that has its own budget.

Llewelyn remained in jail Tuesday night. His bail is set at $10,000.
