LONDON — In Salt Lake City, taco carts along our streets are an easy way to grab a quick meal. During the Olympics
London food vendor, Paul Conlin sells hot dogs, burgers, and bacon rolls to tourists and locals alike. He does his best to keep people happy at his stand around the corner from the Tower Hill Underground subway station.
"And at the moment, everybody is happy," Conlin said. He works at this food cart serving up the type of food you'd normally find in America. Except for the brown sauce, burger sauce, and chili sauce.
It seems that the British weather dictates what people order in downtown London.
"We mainly do hot dogs, burgers, bacon rolls, and we do paninis, cold sandwiches, depending on the weather, really," Conlin said about his menu.
On rainy days, which seem to be a specialty in London, hot food is the order of the day. On sunny days, it's more sodas and ice cream. But with the Olympics in town, Conlin has seen people order anything at any time, not the typical way Londoners do things.
It would seem that his food cart unites nations.
"When it's like this, you don't know who's the British, who's the Americans, the Australians," he said.
Conlin has noticed a lot of his customers are Americans. And he's not sure exactly why that is. The only thing he can think of is he knows that Americans are used to street vendor type foods out of a cart.
Having the Olympics in London is definitely giving Conlin's food stand a lot of business, but with all the foreigners, he is also doubling as a tourist guide.
"I should have set up a charity box, and make a couple of donations, and give it to somebody, really," Conlin said after he realized all the traffic he was getting.
That idea would certainly make somebody's rainy day a lot sunnier.
