SALT LAKE CITY -- More Utah parents are getting a diagnosis of autism or Asperger's, but they may not know what to do next. One group is trying to make it easier with an event this weekend to raise funds and awareness.
Laura Anderson says those first months and years after her son was diagnosed had some confusion and fear - and plenty of promises from different places about this program or that intervention or diet Now she's the president of the Autism Council of Utah, and a member of MAKS - Moms of Autistic Kids.
"This is a serious need and it's going to affect our entire community for years to come."

Anderson is talking to teachers and doctors about the reliable places to go for information and the questions to ask about unstudied methods and treatments. She says it's important to ask about the evidence, whether it is safe, and if the information is objective and not just based on testimonials.
Anderson says be cautious if there are claims made that the treatment or product will produce quick results, and especially if payment is required before services are delivered.
She says some reputable organizations include The Utah Department of Health, The Utah Department of Human Services, the Utah State Office of Education, and University Health Care's Neurobehavior HOME program. Other resources and websites are listed at autismcouncilofutah.org.
"We have got to move forward and work together," she said.
Meanwhile the 4th annual "Walk Now for Autism Speaks" is Saturday morning. It's happening at Rio Tinto stadium. Anderson says parents and representatives from several different groups that have connections to Autism will be there supporting the efforts to raise awareness and funds.
