SALT LAKE CITY -- Bike sales have increased 9 percent over ten years, with 44 percent more people now biking to work. But cyclists say that Salt Lake City and the county are not keeping up.
"Long term planning, it just needs to happen. They've been talking about this for 25 years, but nothing ever seems to happen," said Phil Blomquist, the owner and manager of The Bicycle Center in Sugarhouse.
Although white lanes have been painted on the side of the road, Blomquist said it isn't a big enough step.
"We need to have dedicated bike paths where people don't get interfered by cars and intersections and things like that," he described.
Blomquist believes there is a demand for more trails, saying that trails like that along the side of Legacy Highway are "packed all the time."
Other major cities around the nation have added more biking trails and paths, with some states passing laws to protect cyclists from cars.
