SALT LAKE CITY — Wide receiver Raelon Singleton has left the University of Utah football program due to “family reasons,” the university announced Thursday.
Singleton, a native of Crosby, Texas, became a much-needed asset to Utah’s receiving corps and was the program’s second-leading receiver the last two seasons.
Although it’s unclear as to exactly what the issue is, head coach Kyle Whittingham said that Singleton’s family should be the No. 1 priority.
“We are sorry to see Raelon leave, but understand that his family comes first,” Whittingham said in a statement. “We appreciate his contributions to our program over the last four years and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
Singleton tweeted later in the day that after "careful consideration and discussions with my family" that he was going to leave the school after the spring semester as a graduate transfer.
"This decision was not an easy one and involved many hours of thoughtful consideration, particularly with respect to my own plans for my future," he continued. "I am confident, however, that this decision represents a positive move forward."
Singleton finished his career at Utah with 69 catches for 1,044 yards and eight touchdowns. The bulk of his work — 63 catches for 995 yards — came the last two seasons at Utah. Singleton played in 34 games following his redshirt freshman season and had one final season to play at Utah.
Utah will hope to use its incoming recruiting class as a way to fill the hole left by Singleton. Utah is in play for several four-star receiver recruits, but the program will not know where they stand until February’s National Signing Day.
