WEST JORDAN — A pilot and passenger were taken to a hospital in serious condition Friday evening after a plane's engine failed, forcing it to fly through power lines and crash-land at South Valley Regional Airport.
Two other passengers, ages 38 and 50, did not have serious injuries and walked away from the crash, authorities said. The pilot, 38, and another person in the plane, 28, were transported to Intermountain Medical Center in serious but stable condition.
Their names have not been released.
The plane had taken off from the same airport earlier in the day, said Reed Scharman, deputy chief of the West Jordan Fire Department. No fuel leaked, and no fire ignited, Scharman said.
"It's just fortunate with the outcome they got," he said.
About 6 p.m., the small plane lost power, and its nose hit a lower power line. But the tail of the plane was righted by another line, and the plane slid sideways into a field near a roadway, Scharman said.
The deputy fire chief said he didn't know the plane's route or why it failed. Federal accident investigators will look to determine the cause of the crash, Scharman said.
