SALT LAKE CITY — A man shot during a police chase in Tooele Tuesday died from his injuries, police said.

Bountiful resident Roman Carrillo, 19, died late Tuesday after engaging in a high-speed chase and shootout with police just before 5 a.m., Salt Lake City police said. The chase began in Salt Lake City and ended in Tooele County.

No officers were injured, but Carrillo was taken to a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. It was unclear Wednesday whether Carrillo died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or died from gunshots fired by police. This is likely to be cleared up by an autopsy.

Officers had originally responded to reports of a shooting near 235 S. 500 West in Salt Lake City where a man had been shot in the leg, according to Salt Lake police detective Greg Wilking. The man was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.

Police soon spotted a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle from the shooting and attempted to get the driver to pull over. Carillo was driving and there was one passenger, Wilking said.

Carrillo did not comply and police chased the car onto I-80 and west toward Tooele. The chase reached speeds over 100 miles per hour. Police attempted to stop the the car by deploying spike strips along the roadway.

The car finally exited at Lake Point in Tooele County and crashed into a yard on Canyon Road where the chase ended.

Carrillo got out of the car and began firing at the officers, hitting one of the officer's cars multiple times, according to police. Two officers shot back.

Carrillo received multiple gunshot wounds and was soon taken to an area hospital.

The passenger, Andrew Greening, 19, surrendered without incident and was taken into custody, according to police. Greening told police he shot the man at 235 S. 500 West at least two times, according to a report from the Salt Lake County Jail. It was later determined that the man had been shot three times. Greening was subsequently booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for discharge of a firearm.

According to court records, Carrillo was convicted in February in 2nd District Court with failing to stop at an officer's commands, giving false ID to an officer, and possession of tobacco by a minor. He was placed on probation for one year.

In November, while Carrillo was incarcerated at Farmington Bay Youth Center, he hit another resident multiple times, resulting in Carrillo being charged in adult court with assault on a prisoner, a third-degree felony. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail and placed on three years of probation.

Tooele and West Valley police are investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Salt Lake Police Chief Mike Brown said the two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine paid administrative leave.

Brown said the department stands behind the officers and believes they made every effort to diminish the risk of injuries to those involved in the chase and shooting as well as the neighborhood where the pursuit ended.
