FAIRVIEW, Sanpete County — A man was taken into custody Monday afternoon after police used tear gas to end a nearly eight-hour standoff that began when the man broke into a home and barricaded himself in it, the town's mayor said.

William Davis Lamb, 35, was arrested just before 1 p.m. when officers deployed the irritant gas to flush him out of the home. After Lamb didn't leave the house, a K-9 officer was sent into the home and located the man hiding, Fairview Mayor Jeffrey Cox said.

"The K-9 found him and started to go after him, and that's when he came out of his hiding spot," Cox said.

Lamb suffered a dog bite, but no other injuries were reported, Cox said.

The ordeal began at about 5 a.m. when officers received a report of a disturbance at a residence near 200 North and 300 East. Cox said a man, later identified as Lamb, violated a protective order when he broke into the home and barricaded himself in it.

The family living in the home was able to escape and call police. As a precaution, a SWAT team from Utah County was called in to assist.

Cox said Fairview Elementary School, which is less than a mile from the home, was locked down temporarily as a precaution and the neighborhood was evacuated. He added the school was not in threat at any point during the incident.

The North Sanpete School District sent an email Monday assuring parents that all students at the elementary school were safe. In a Facebook post later in the morning, the district said students within walking distance of the school would only be released to their parents, otherwise students would ride the bus as usual.

Court records show that Lamb was charged in 6th District Court last week with various felony weapons and misdemeanor assault counts. Jail records show he had been arrested on April 4 and held in Sanpete County Jail on $100,000 bond at the time.

Lamb was also charged Monday with violating a protective order issued against him, according to court records.
