Two charged in lengthy weekend car chase

WEST VALLEY CITY — Two men accused of leading police on a half-hour chase over the weekend, firing several shots at officers in the process, were charged Wednesday.

DeVandre Nays, 20, whose home address is listed in court documents as the Utah State Prison, and Kristopher James Duffy, 24, of Salt Lake City, were each charged in 3rd District Court with theft by receiving stolen property, a second-degree felony.

Nays received additional charges of two counts of assault against a police officer, a second-degree felony; possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony; four counts of discharging a firearm, a third-degree felony; and tampering with evidence, a class A misdemeanor.

Duffy received additional charges of failing to stop at a law enforcer's command, a third-degree felony; failing to stop at a law enforcer's command, a class A misdemeanor; and driving on a suspended license, a class C misdemeanor.

On Saturday, a West Valley police officer attempted to stop a vehicle with no license plates at the Sleep Inn, near 3100 South and 2200 West. Nays told Duffy that the car they were in was stolen, so Duffy didn't pull over because he didn't want to go to jail, the charges state. A third man laid down in the backseat as police approached, according to the charges.

During the ensuing chase, Nays threw various items out of the sunroof, the charges state. The half-hour chase through West Valley, Taylorsville and Cottonwood Heights along various city streets, I-80 and I-215, ended when police deployed tire spikes on I-215 near 200 West.

Once the chase was over, police discovered that Nays had fired several shots at officers, blowing out his own back window in the process. One of the shots hit the headlight of a pursuing officer, the charges state. A witness later told police he heard six to eight shots fired during the pursuit, according to court documents. No one was injured.

Both men have lengthy criminal histories, according to court records.

The third man was not charged.
