SALT LAKE CITY — Have you caught your breathe yet?
High school basketball teams around the state are closing out region titles, and for some, the sprint to the finish comes with extra periods.
That was the case Tuesday night, when Justin Beus' buzzer-beater lifted Timpanogos past Skyridge 84-82 in five overtimes. Yes, you read that right; five OTs.
Derik Eaquinto had 12 points, and Tyler Walker added 17 for the Timberwolves, who lead Region 7 with a 9-1 record. Jensen Hawkins scored 22 to lead the Falcons.
Layton pulled out another close contest last Tuesday, sneaking by Viewmont, 51-46 to keep pace with the Vikings atop Region 2. Blake Hansen led the Lancers with 22 points, and Keejon Sloan scored 11 for Layton.
Just days later, Blake Hansen scored the go-ahead bucket in the waning seconds to give Layton a stunning 59-58 win over co-leader Davis.
The Vikings rebounded from their loss when Josh Mordue hit a buzzer-beater to top Syracuse, 56-54 on Friday night. Mordue had a team-high 18 points for Viewmont (14-6, 8-2 Region 2) as the Vikings took a first-place lead down the stretch of region play.
