LAYTON — Police in Davis County are warning gym patrons to be careful with their valuables after three people reported thefts.

In at least two of those instances, police said gym lockers were left unlocked.

The incidents happened at three separate gyms across Davis County: VASA in Layton, Gold's Gym in Syracuse and Planet Fitness in Roy. In each case, someone stole keys from gym lockers then went into the parking lot and stole items from vehicles.

Kimberli Hunt said she was hoping to start something new when she went to the gym Monday night.

"I had just joined Planet Fitness. I thought this would be a good thing. I had a lot of stress going on," she said.

But it turned out to be even more stressful. Hunt said she works out of her SUV and keeps a laptop and iPad inside, along with her purse. She locked that all up and put her keys in her coat when she went to the gym.

"I left my coat in a locker, unlocked. My mistake. Big mistake," she said.

In time, she went outside and realized what had happened.

"My car was still there. It was unlocked, and everything I had in it was taken. Gone," she said.

Before Hunt could cancel her credit cards, she said someone had already used them several times. Roy police are looking for a woman seen on surveillance video. They said she used Hunt's credit card at a Walgreens, a couple of gas stations and the JC Penney store in the Layton Hills Mall.

"It was kind of disbelief, like, really? Is she doing this?" Hunt said. "She pulls out this hand of (gift) cards and I'm thinking, those are my cards. Those are my gift cards. That's my driver's license, you know, those are my things."

Roy police Det. Josh Taylor said people need to be extra careful when locking up.

"It is frustrating, but you know it's something that does happen," he said. "We just try to educate people to keep your belongings locked up and make sure that there's no way someone is going to easily access them."

Hunt is working to put things back together after the theft.

"She got my keys, so she's got keys to my life — my mailbox, my storage shed, my home," she said.

She hopes other people realize how careful they need to be when locking things up.

"Absolutely. Pay the $5. Get the lock for your locker even if you don't think what you have is valuable," she advised.

Hunt is thankful for friends who are helping her in the meantime.

"A friend of mine stopped by today and brought me a new purse so I could start putting my life back together a little bit in that," she said.

Roy police said they don't have any leads yet from the video or surveillance photos. Police in Syracuse and Layton said they do not have any suspects in their cases.
