BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON —An overdue hiker was found dead in Big Cottonwood Canyon Tuesday.

Unified police believe the 29-year-old man, whose name was not immediately released pending notification of family members, fell 300 to 400 feet while hiking to Sun Dial Peak, which overlooks Lake Blanche.

The man went hiking in Big Cottonwood Canyon Monday afternoon and posted pictures on social media once he reached the peak between 1 and 1:30 p.m., said Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke.

But when he failed to show up for work Tuesday morning, his roommates went looking for him, Lohrke said. They found his vehicle still parked at the trailhead and contacted police. Investigators pinged his cellphone and discovered he was still in the area, Lohrke said.

A helicopter from the Utah Department of Public Safety was used to locate the body.
