SALT LAKE CITY — Another week of football wrapped up with questions still running rampant. Teams like Air Force looked unstoppable a week ago, but then it lost to Wyoming. Hawaii is still undefeated in conference play, but so is Boise State, and that is expected. Fans weigh in on their teams' performances as the Mountain West remains up in the air.
The week started for the Mountain West when Boise State traveled to New Mexico. Boise State was favored to roll in the game, and the Broncos did just that. The score was 42-7 at halftime, and while New Mexico had a couple fourth-quarter touchdowns it wasn't nearly enough to erase the deficit. Boise State won 49-28.
Air Force beat Navy last week, and Navy beat No. 6 Houston this week. So expectations for Air Force going into Wyoming was that the Falcons would win by a couple touchdowns, if not more. The Falcons found themselves in a 28-6 hole that they desperately tried to claw their way out of, but the comeback fell short and Wyoming upset Air Force 35-26.
Hawaii entered conference play with the overall record of 1-3. The Warriors beat Nevada, which no one expected, and despite its struggles San Jose State was still the favorites to beat Hawaii. Hawaii surprised again, beating San Jose State on its own turf 34-17.
Nevada was looking for redemption after dropping its Mountain West opener to Hawaii last week. Fresno State has struggled all year, and Nevada pounced on the opportunity to get itself back on track. At halftime, Nevada was up 21-6, and the Wolf Pack held off a late Fresno State push to win the game 27-22.
Utah State was bitter after dropping a winnable game against Air Force at home, then having the defense show up while the offense struggled against Boise. Colorado State needed a win too, after getting dismantled by Wyoming the week prior. Utah State came out swinging and led 24-10 at the half. Colorado State scored three touchdowns and Utah State got shut out in the second half, resulting in a 31-24 Colorado State win.
San Diego State was still feeling the sting from the loss to South Alabama coming into this week. UNLV traveled to San Diego State in a game where no one gave the Rebels a chance. San Diego State had no problems taking care of UNLV 26-7.
