LAYTON — Davis County sheriff's deputies are investigating the death of an 18-year-old Layton woman found early Sunday at the bottom of a 70-foot cliff.

Deputies received a call about 9:15 p.m. Saturday of a lost hiker from people who were helping the parents of Alexys Hipwell find their daughter, said Davis County Sheriff's Sgt. DeeAnn Servey.

Hipwell had been sending texts to her family, Servey said. She declined to say Sunday what those messages were.

About 12:20 a.m. Sunday, search and rescue team members found the girl's body in Adams Canyon.

"The preliminary evidence shows that she most likely slipped and fell due to the weather conditions and the area where she was found," Servey said. "Our deepest condolence goes out to Alexys’ family and friends dealing with her tragic loss at this difficult time."
