WEST VALLEY CITY — An 18-year-old man was shot while driving on state Route 201 on Tuesday, causing him to crash, police say.

The shooting occurred just after 4:30 p.m. while the man was driving in the far left lane of S.R. 201 near 3200 West, said Utah Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Marissa Villaseñor.

A small red sedan pulled up next to him on the left shoulder, and someone from inside the vehicle fired several shots at the 18-year-old's SUV, Villaseñor said.

The man was hit, causing the SUV to drift off of the road moments later, colliding with another vehicle in the process before crashing through a fence and coming to a rest on a frontage road. The man was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray in serious condition but was expected to survive, Villaseñor said.

A 15-year-old boy who was a passenger in the SUV was not injured.

Police are looking for the occupants of the red sedan. There were at least two people in the car in addition to the driver, according to Villaseñor. Investigators were unsure Tuesday whether the vehicle got off S.R. 201 onto Bangerter Highway following the shooting or continued to drive west.

Villaseñor said the shooting is believed to be gang-related. It is believed the occupants of the two vehicles know each other, she said.

Anyone with information about the incident can call the State Bureau of Investigation, which is overseeing the case, at 801-532-2168.
