SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police believe an 18-year-old shot and killed over the weekend was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Eric Padilla, 18, was shot to death just after 9 p.m. Saturday while visiting a friend at the Sky Harbor Apartments, 221 N. Sun Harbor Terrace, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Brandon Shearer.

There was a knock at the door, and then shots were fired after people in the apartment went to see who it was, Shearer said. He did not have more information Monday about how the shooting unfolded, how many people were in the apartment at the time or if the friend was the intended target. The friend was not injured.

Shearer said, however, that Padilla did not have any known gang ties and was not believed to be the intended target.

After the shooting, the gunman was last seen running away from the scene. The only description investigators have is a Hispanic man wearing all black clothing.

Anyone with information can call police at 801-799-3000.
