TAYLORSVILLE — Normally scoring 83 points leads to pretty good things for a high school football team.

Jordan High took that challenge, and out-did it Friday night, though.

The Region 4 opener for the Beetdiggers and Taylorsville featured a combined 25 touchdowns in scoring the second-most points in Utah high school football history, with the Beetdiggers prevailing 91-83 over the host Warriors on Friday night.

Jordan's 91 points is the most by a Utah team since 1954, when Cedar scored 95 in a shutout of Kanab. Both teams combined for 1,451 yards of offense, beating the previous state record set by Jordan in a 78-76 triple-overtime win over Brighton two years ago.

Crew Wakley finished with seven passing touchdowns and four rushing scores for Jordan, and Taylorsville quarterback Dane Leituala had eight scoring strikes and three rushing TDs.

The Thunderbirds (3-1) opened the game with all the momentum, taking a 10-0 lead when Andrew Jessop completed a 13-yard pass to Chaz Ah You to end the first quarter.

Davis rushed for his first score on a 32-yard gain to open the second quarter, but Timpview responded with a pair of TDs by Alema Te’o and Kyle Van Leeuwen to take a 24-6 lead into halftime.

That’s when the Hawks went to work.

Quarterback Will Dana found Landon Maxfield for a 21-yard scoring strike to open the third period, and Davis added TD runs of 8 and 12 yards before Dana-to-Johnsen gave the Hawks a lead they would never relinquish.

Timpview had a chance to tie in the final drive of the game with a first-and-10 from the 15-yard line, but three-straight passes to Ah You were off the mark and the Hawks survived their region opener.
