PROVO — A new football season is upon us. The Big 12 expansion talk has been entertaining to say the least. But now it’s time to talk some actual football. The Big 12 conversation will still be in the background, but it’s refreshing to discuss what’s taking place on the field.

The football season kicks off this Friday for BYU with the beginning of fall camp and with camp opening up, it begins the first camp under first-year head coach Kalani Sitake.

Sitake is a newcomer to the title of head coach, as he is one of the youngest head coaches in college football. Despite the lack of experience as a head coach, the expectations are still high in Provo as BYU prepares for its sixth season as an FBS independent.

To live up to those high expectations Sitake and his staff hope that a handful of newcomers who will be going through their first practices as BYU Cougars on Friday can contribute immediately to help build depth and be game-changers as BYU embarks on its toughest schedule in program history this fall.

Let’s take a look at the five newcomers that you should be keeping tabs on throughout Camp Cougar.

Jonah Trinnaman, wide receiver (Snow College transfer)

Since Austin Collie left BYU for the NFL in 2008, the Cougars have lacked a wide receiver who, on any given play, could bust the lid off a defense. BYU feels it might have that in Snow College transfer Jonah Trinnaman.

Trinnaman originally signed with Utah State out of American Fork High School, but that didn’t last long after the Aggies informed Trinnaman weeks after Signing Day in 2014 that he would play safety instead of the wide receiver position as originally promised. So Trinnaman ended up in Ephraim, Utah, where he played two years for the Badgers.

BYU was able to hold off rival Utah and new Utes wide receiver coach Guy Holliday, who Trinnaman had a strong relationship with, before ultimately getting the JUCO speedster to sign with the Cougars.

Expectations are high for Trinnaman as he could potentially be a starter at one of the two wide receiver spots.

Handsome Tanielu, defensive tackle (Snow College transfer)

Tanielu was the first commit Sitake landed after being introduced as BYU’s new head coach in December. Tanielu had offers from Utah, Texas and others before deciding to sign with BYU.

With Sitake and new defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki bringing a 4-3 scheme, BYU needed more depth along the defensive line. Tanielu bolsters the depth in the middle of BYU's defensive line, and if Travis Tuiloma is healthy when the season opener against Arizona rolls around, Tanielu and Tuiloma could form a difficult tandem to stop for opposing offensive lines.

Andrew Eide, offensive tackle (Southern Utah transfer)

Eide is a graduate transfer from Southern Utah University who played under coach Ed Lamb the last three years in Cedar City. Last season, Eide was an honorable-mention selection in the Big Sky Conference at left tackle. Eide has only one season to play at BYU, and he is expected to compete for playing time at right tackle with Austin Hoyt who was atop the depth chart out of spring practices back in April.

Uriah Leiataua, defensive end (returned missionary)

Two years ago on Signing Day, Leiataua a three-star prospect by Rivals, flipped his commitment from Stanford to BYU and ended up signing with the Cougars. It was a big coup for the Cougars, who don’t sway many recruits from Stanford.

Leiataua returned home from an LDS Church mission in June. When you look at players who could potentially replace the pass rushing abilities left by Bronson Kaufusi, who’s now with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, Leiataua might be an option to help fill that void as he had 24 sacks in his final two seasons at Dominguez High School in California.

Solomone Wolfgramm, tight end (BYU-Hawaii transfer)

When Ty Detmer was hired as BYU’s new offensive coordinator last December, most fans knew right away that the tight end position would become a focus of BYU’s offense once again. When Detmer was the quarterback for the Cougars, he had great tight ends to throw the football to in Chris Smith and Byron Rex.

BYU hasn’t had success lately with conventional tight ends since Dennis Pitta and Andrew George graduated in 2009. Detmer had to get creative with his tight end unit this year, and there’s a feeling that they might have found a gem in BYU-Hawaii transfer Solomone Wolfgramm.

Wolfgramm played basketball for the Seasiders for a year and served a mission to Phoenix where he was a missionary companion with BYU signee Motekiai Langi. After serving a mission, Wolfgramm transferred to BYU and has been participating in summer conditioning with the team. At 6-foot-5, 276 pounds, Wolfgramm has the size to compete, and he is fairly athletic for his size. Wolfgramm and former Davis Dart Troy Hinds who is healthy after suffering a hip injury a year ago are two of the favorites to land the starting tight end job when the Cougars play Arizona Sept. 3rd.
