MIDVALE — Undercover investigators conducting a prostitution sting arrested johns and at least one man suspected of being a pimp for investigation of human trafficking.

Bryan Joseph Crapo, 58, of Sandy, was arrested Thursday for investigation of human trafficking and exploiting a prostitute.

Late last week, investigators from the Unified Police Department and the Utah Attorney General's Office set up a sting in Midvale to catch johns, or people who hire prostitutes, said Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell. Five were arrested in an approximately five-hour period, he said.

While conducting that operation, detectives found an online ad for an escort in their area. An undercover officer contacted the woman and arranged for her to come to the motel where they were conducting the sting, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.

After she was detained at the motel by police, detectives asked her if she received a ride from anyone to the motel, the report states. She said yes and that a man was waiting for her in a pickup truck outside.

She said she had just met the man in the truck, Crapo, earlier that day through a mutual friend. Crapo told her she could earn money working for his escort service, the report states.

According to police, Crapo made all of the woman's appointments, told her what to do at each appointment and how much to charge, and then kept the bulk of the money she was paid for himself.

Investigators noted in the report that the woman "cried a lot" while being questioned and stated that she "was tired of being used by older men."

"She stated that Crapo told her she better not get him in any trouble," the report states.
