SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — Utah golf history will be made this week, but it won’t be at a local course on the Wasatch Front.

Five native Utahns will play in the same major for the first time in PGA Tour history when the PGA Championship tees off Thursday.

Tony Finau of Lehi, Danny Summerhays of Farmington and Zac Blair of Ogden are regular PGA starters this season. Joining them at the Baltusrol Golf Club are local teaching pros Joe Summerhays and Tommy Sharp.

For Finau, after top-20 finishes in this year’s British Open and last year’s PGA Championship, he’s expecting big things this week.

“Any time you get a hot finish in a big tournament, it can give you confidence moving forward,” Finau said. “We’re back at a different venue, but it’s the same golf tournament and I look forward to competing this week.”

Joe Summerhays, a cousin of Danny, is the head pro at Eagle Lake in Roy. And while he’ll be playing in his first major, he got a start competing against his cousin at Wednesday’s practice round.

“It’s such a fun time, spending time with him,” Joe Summerhays said. “He’s been really good at helping me out and trying to help me feel comfortable. That’s been a huge positive.”

Sharp is the head pro at Golf Lab and is playing in his first major as well. He said his goal is just to make the cut, but he knows even that will require him to play at the top of his game.

“The key for me will be hitting the fairways, and then scrambling around the green if and when I miss any,” Sharp said. “The rough around the green is pretty gnarly, and there are a lot of bunkers around the green.”

Sharp tees off at 5:10 a.m. MDT, Blair at 7 a.m. MDT, and Joe Summerhays will go off at 10:15 a.m. MDT. Finau will follow at 10:55 a.m. MDT, and Danny Summerhays will be the final local to tee off at 12:05 p.m. MDT. The tournament will be broadcast on TNT.
