GREAT BRITAIN — If you were an English major like me, odds are you were a bit of an Anglophile.

Austen, Dickens, Bronte and the like were enough of my constant companions from age 13 on that I frequently imagined myself on some grand estate catching up on my correspondence while sitting on a chaise in the salon.

Likewise, discovering the wealth of content from the BBC and Masterpiece Theater as an eager-to-learn young person led to a lot of trying-on of highbrow British accents, doing my best Kiera Knightley or Ben Kingsley impression. Even with all my misguided aspiration to be on a show like Saturday Night Live, I could never do those lilting or breathy British accents quite right. I ended up sounding more like Dick Van Dyke than Julie Andrews.

To show us how it’s done, Siobhan Thompson guides us through the lovely British Isles in a short YouTube video, where she explains the different affectations in the most charming way possible.

Though the video is two years old, it’s recently picked up popularity and has been spreading around the interwebs.

Be sure to try out your best Norfolk or Liverpool accent with your coworkers or family members today. If you get a low-level cringe, consider yourself a success.
