THE BACKYARD — You've probably heard of Russell Crowe the actor, but have you heard of Russell the crow?

Crows are considered some of the smartest animals in the world, as their intelligence is considered on par with chimpanzees. In Denmark, Russell the crow is certainly no exception

A Danish family rescued Russell after finding in a dilapidated state as a baby. The family tried to call a wildlife rehabilitator, but, with no one able to take him in, they nursed him back to health themselves.

Now, fully grown and able to fly on his own, Russell has formed a special bond with the family's 2-year-old son, Otto, as seen in this video.

"Russell and Otto's relationship bloomed over the summer. They have a special bond," Laerke, Otto's mom, says in the video. "Otto has never been scared of Russell, (and) Russell would only allow Otto to pet him."

If the family opens a window, Russell will even join Otto on the couch to watch some TV.

Even though Otto and Russell "are really great friends," Laerke acknowledged that he's still a wild bird and not always around, adding that she never leaves the two unsupervised.

"Russell is a big part of our family now," Laerke says. "When I take the kids to daycare, he will join me, sitting on top of the car."

Russell even has a "love-hate" relationship with the family's pets, often teasing their dogs and cats.

"Living with Russell means there is never a dull moment in our life. He allows us to interact with nature in a way that most people are not able to. We're his flock," Laerke says.
