HELPER, Carbon County — A 46-year-old West Valley woman is dead following a crash on U.S. 6 Friday afternoon, police said.

Utah Highway Patrol trooper Evan Kirby said at about 2:15 p.m., a wide load truck was traveling eastbound with two escort vehicles on the road about 10 miles north of Helper.

A woman driving the second pilot car, a dark Dodge Dakota, drifted over the center line and side-swiped a white Dodge Caliber traveling west in the other lane before crashing head-on into a water tanker-type commercial vehicle also traveling westbound, Kirby said.

Kirby said the woman driving the Dakota was killed. Her name was not immediately released.

The driver of the commercial vehicle received minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

A black Ford Focus traveling behind the Dodge Caliber went off the road to evade the wreck and received minor damage, but nobody in the Focus or Caliber were injured, Kirby added.

Police are still investigating the accident, Kirby said. He added investigators do not believe speed, impairment or distracted driving factored in the crash.

"We will have to follow up with the other pilot driver and the (driver of the) oversized load just to figure out what was going on at the exact moment of the crash," Kirby said.

The crash closed the highway in the area, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. All traffic is being diverted from U.S. 6 to U.S. 191 and Emma Park Rd., according to the Carbon County Sheriff's Office.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
