AYRSHIRE, Scotland — Phil Mickelson stole the opening round of the British Open after shooting an 8-under-par 63 that could have easily been a 62.

Lehi’s Tony finau did pretty well, too.

Finau carded a 4-under 67 in a bogey-free round that teed off in the early hours of Thursday morning in the United States.

Finau poured in back-to-back birds on the fourth and fifth holes, then carded a birdie each on No. 13 and No. 18 to finish tied with Justin Thomas, Steve Stricker, Billy Herschel, Soren Kjeldsen, Andy Sullivan, Zach Johnson and Keegan Bradley at Royal Troon Golf Club.

Only Mickelson and second-placers Patrick Reed and Martin Kaymer shot better rounds. Former BYU golfer Danny Summerhays shot even-par 71 Thursday to finish tied for 51st.

The second round tees off at 11 p.m. MT on NBC’s Golf Channel. Finau will tee off at 11:46 p.m.
