HURRICANE, Washington County — A 20-year-old man drowned Wednesday while swimming in a pond south of Quail Creek Reservoir, police reported.

The man was swimming in a private pond in an area called Quail Creek Ranch around 3 p.m. when he drowned, Hurricane police said.

The man was with a family member when he "attempted to cross the pond but couldn't swim the distance," the agency said in a statement.

The family member tried unsuccessfully to keep the man above water and then contacted emergency responders. Hurricane police and fire, Utah State Parks rangers and Washington County Search and Rescue responded and found the man's body in an area of the pond that's about 9 feet deep.

"Our sincerest condolences go out to the family during this difficult time," Hurricane police said in a statement.

The man's name was not immediately released.
