SALT LAKE CITY — A sports pundit says the U.S. men's national soccer team is just like BYU football, and an analyst jinxes England on live TV. More fun stories from the world of sports in today's From Left Field!

1. Is the U.S. men’s soccer team like BYU football? Colin Cowherd thinks so.

Soccer has been in the spotlight for the past few weeks, with EURO 2016 and Copa América Centenario in action.

The U.S. men’s national team (USMNT) had an average Copa. Jurgen Klinsmann’s men finished fourth in the competition and looked poor their last two games.

The USMNT seems to always be mediocre, if not, just below that.

For Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd, there’s a college football team that reminds him of the U.S. men’s soccer: BYU football.

During his radio show Tuesday morning, Cowherd decided to compare men’s national soccer teams to college football teams. Colin compared powerhouses like Alabama, USC and Ohio State to Germany, Brazil and Italy.

Cowherd’s comparison/reasons why the USMNT is like BYU football:

  • Darn solid
  • Consistently scrappy
  • Bowl level
  • Can match up with everybody except the top six or seven teams
  • Not really taken seriously by big teams

Does that sound like BYU football to you?

Cowherd said it’s “OK” that the U.S. men’s soccer is like BYU football, but nothing more or less than that.

As a soccer columnist/expert myself, I must say Cowherd’s comparisons are pretty accurate, with the exception of one or two.

2\. Steven McClaren jinxes England on live air, Iceland scores game-winning goal ===============================================================================

Football (soccer) is life for most in England. But for many years now, the English national team has been overrated, overhyped and nothing short of mediocre to bad. The Three Lions have suffered humiliation in recent international tournaments.

On Monday, former England national team manager Steve McClaren had to endure an embarrassing moment thanks to another embarrassing England performance.

During Monday’s match between England and Iceland in EURO 2016 round of 16 action, McClaren was a guest analyst on Sky Sports News HQ. The match was 1-1 and, for McClaren, it appeared England was gaining control of the match. He even stated how English players Daniel Sturridge and Kyle Walker were causing all kinds of problems for Iceland.

Then, the inevitable England fail happened.

As McClaren was about to mention how Iceland’s only real threat is forward Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, said player scored a goal, which would prove to be the game-winner, to eliminate England.

McClaren’s reaction is absolutely priceless.

England is out of EURO 2016, but we should be thankful to England and McClaren for giving us this golden, cringe-worthy, hilarious TV moment. ![](https://beacon.deseretconnect.com/beacon.gif?cid=414730&pid=4)
