SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City officials have approved a zoning change that will help make way for a new 375-foot tall hotel to be built on the downtown convention center property.
The City Council voted Tuesday to raise the permitted construction heights at the Salt Palace Convention Center from 75 feet.
Salt Lake County leaders had originally sought an unlimited height limit to help attract a developer for the proposed 800-room hotel on county-owned land at the center.
Two sites are being considered for the hotel, including space now occupied by the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and the northwestern corner of the intersection at 200 South and West Temple.
Utah officials in support of the long-awaited hotel say it will provide needed rooms for Utah's convention business.
