WHEATFIELD, Ariz. — Two children from northeastern Arizona, whose disappearance Saturday triggered an Amber Alert for Arizona, Utah and New Mexico were found safe and the alert was lifted Sunday, police in Arizona said.
Officials with the Chinle Police Department in Arizona confirmed that the two boys were found safe in New Mexico late Sunday morning and arrangements are being made to return them to their parents in Arizona.
The Amber Alert was lifted in Utah by the Bureau of Criminal Identification at about 8 a.m. Sunday because officials no longer believed the man suspected of taking the children was headed for Utah.
Though the alert was lifted in Utah it remained in effect in both Arizona and New Mexico until the children were found.
The alert was issued after the mother of the two children reported that her boyfriend, 26-year-old Clinton Johnson, was "drinking and took off with her children and vehicle" at about 3:54 p.m. Saturday, according to Chinle police officials.
The kids, 5-year-old Lyric Gray and 7-year-old Kerwin Gray, were reported missing and an Amber Alert was issued for Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. They were later found safe in New Mexico later Sunday morning, Chinle police said.
