WEST VALLEY CITY — A road rage incident led to the fatal shooting of a man Saturday afternoon in West Valley City, police said.

The shooting occurred near 3500 South and 5600 West just before 2 p.m., according to West Valley City police Lt. Dalan Taylor. An adult male was riding his longboard traveling northbound along 5600 West when he had an altercation with two men in a vehicle pulling a trailer. The vehicle was stopped at a red light at 3500 South during the verbal altercation, and both men got out of the vehicle during the argument, Taylor said.

"From preliminarily what the witnesses are telling us, the argument was between this individual on the longboard and these guys in the vehicle," Taylor said. "We're not sure what the argument stemmed from, whether they know each other or if there was something that occurred a little further up the road that caused this argument to break out."

According to witnesses on scene, the longboarder tried to throw something at the men in the vehicle and was struck by a gunshot.

"It looked like the guy with the gun was going to start getting back in his truck and they were still screaming at each other," said eyewitness Aliesha Doxey. "Then he got out and shot him point blank. It was sad, senseless, over a stupid little argument."

When paramedics arrived, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man who did the shooting remained on the scene and both men are in police custody being questioned, Taylor said. However, investigators are not yet releasing if the shooter was the driver or the passenger in the vehicle.

Northbound 5600 West was closed for several hours from 4100 South to 3500 South during the investigation.

"This is a tragedy all the way around," Taylor said. "I mean, an individual has lost his life and from what we are seeing so far, it was probably over something probably pretty minor."

The name of the victim has not yet been released, pending family notification.
