SOUTH SALT LAKE — A man is in police custody after a SWAT situation in South Salt Lake Friday afternoon.

A man called dispatch to report that his 31-year-old son had possibly overdosed on heroin at 1:18 p.m., according to Gary Keller of the South Salt Lake Police Department. He said the father stated his son appeared to be conscious but unresponsive at the time and officers were dispatched to the home in the area of 2930 South and 300 East.

“Apparently (the son) armed himself with some sort of a weapon and as officers arrived they heard a shot inside the house,” Keller said. “They did make contact with the suspect after that, so he was alive at that time after the shot was fired. We’re still trying to reestablish contact with this individual.”

As a result of the fired shot, SWAT was called to the scene. Keller said the father was not in the home, but investigators do not know if there were more people inside the building.

The SWAT situation closed 300 East from Cordelia Avenue (2890 South) to Gregson Avenue (3020 South).

The man was arrested just before 4:30 p.m. During negotiations, he mentioned a body in the house, according to SSLPD. However, detectives said they do not believe anyone else is in the home. They are currently working to obtain a warrant to search the house.

Members of the public should avoid the area as the situation unfolds. Keller said anyone picking up a student from Granite Park Junior High, located at 3200 S. 300 East, needs to approach the school from State Street.

More information will be added as it becomes available.
