SALT LAKE CITY — Two people were hospitalized Saturday following a high-speed chase that reached speeds of more than 100 mph and resulted in a rollover crash on I-80.
Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Beau Mason said the incident occurred Saturday evening when a trooper pulled over a vehicle for speeding on eastbound I-80 near 7200 West. Upon questioning the occupants, the officer suspected that he was being given false information.
In the process of continuing to investigate, the vehicle took off prompting, a short high-speed pursuit with speeds topping 100 mph.
Mason said the male driver, who was accompanied by a female passenger, "both around 30 (years old)," rolled over. Both sustained "fairly serious injuries," but the driver's condition appeared to be more severe, he said. The woman's injuries were not life-threatening.
Both were transported by medical helicopter to a local hospital. Their names were not released Saturday.
The freeway was shut down for a few hours while police investigated the crash. During the shutdown, traffic was diverted from the freeway at 5600 West and directed onto state Route 201 as an alternate route.
