HUNTINGTON, Emery County — A woman who had to be extricated from her vehicle was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday after being hit by a driver who authorities say was trying to reach his dropped cellphone.

About 2:45 p.m. Sunday, an Audi was traveling on U.S. 6 when a male driver "got distracted after he dropped his phone," according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

As the driver "leaned down to get the phone," the Audi drifted into oncoming traffic and sideswiped a 20-foot trailer being hauled by a pickup truck, according to a statement from the UHP. That contact caused the Audi to spin out and hit a third vehicle head-on.

A woman in her 20s who was driving the third vehicle was taken by medical helicopter to a local hospital. A woman in her 40s who was also in the car was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

The Audi caught fire after the collision, but no one was injured, according to troopers. The occupants of the pickup were also uninjured.
